We distill Montanya Rums in the distillery in Riverland Industrial Park, 10 minutes outside of Crested Butte, Colorado. Visitors are welcome to book a tour of our distillery online. We are always happy to show you what we do every day at Montanya. In the absence of a tour, here are the basics:

FERMENTATION

Fermentations are carried out at Montanya Distillers in our own facility. We do not use any artificial additives, flavorings, third party distillates, or Neutral Grain Spirits. We use only raw sugarcane, yeast, yeast nutrients and water.

DISTILLING

We distill Montanya Rums in the distillery in Riverland Industrial Park, 10 minutes outside of Crested Butte, Colorado. We finished expanding our distillery at the end of 2022 and now offer distillery tours. Between August 2008 and October 2011, all distillations took place in Silverton, Colorado. All aged rums made in Silverton were bottled by November, 2011. (You can read more about how we distill here.)

BOTTLING, AGING AND THE USE OF HONEY

We carry out all of our aging, bottling and labeling at our barrel house and bottling facility two miles south of the town of Crested Butte.

Prior to Summer 2021, Platino, Oro and Exclusiva received a tiny amount of honey at bottling time, sourced from Colorado bees and caramelized before use. The honey accounted for less than .04% in Platino and Oro and even less in Exclusiva. As of Summer 2021, we ended the practice of adding this honey. This was a goal of Karen's for some time prior to this timeframe as Colorado bee populations have been struggling due to a variety of factors, including climate change. While we originally used honey because its acidic properties helped bring out the rum's natural flavors, we no longer feel there is enough benefit to warrant continued use.

You can learn more about our labeling practices here. (See this page for age statements.)

PACKAGING

Our packaging is free of plastics. Our bottles are made in the USA and Colombia and are Cradle to Cradle certified. Our labels come from the USA and are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified. Our corks are USA-made synthetic corks from Tapi.

SOURCING

Prior to 2021, Montanya Distillers only bottled rum distilled and aged in Silverton and Crested Butte, Colorado. In February of 2021, Montanya accepted 25 barrels of rum from Three Roll Estate to manage a short-term inventory shortage. This rum was bottled as Montanya Platino and Oro in a 50-50 blend with Montanya Rum and blended in one barrel of Valentia. It was not used in the aging or bottling of Exclusiva. All of this rum was blended and sold in 2021.

In September of 2021, Montanya accepted 70 barrels of oak-aged rum from the Florida Distilling Company, also to see us through the short-term inventory shortage while our distillery expansion is completed. This rum has been blended with Montanya rums and barreled for aging. It will be used in all four expressions of Montanya Rum and is expected to be in circulation for one to one-and-a-half years. The rum from both companies was American made and sourced in accordance with our B Corp standards and commitments, including the use of American-grown, non-GMO sugarcane.
