Proud to be a B Corp
In November 2018, Montanya Distillers became the first distillery in Colorado and the third in the nation to become a certified B Corporation®. The distinction recognized our commitment prioritizing social and environmental sustainability and measuring success by more than our financial bottom line.
Montanya received a score of 119 from B Lab® , the independent nonprofit that certifies and supports B Corporations. That was 32% higher than the other distilleries on the list.
The certification was—and continues to be—important to Montanya and Founder/Owner Karen Hoskin, who has shopped using the B-Corp directory for years and has always admired companies who work hard to be a force for good.
As she said at the time, “It is one thing to say you operate a sustainable, environmentally responsible distillery. It is another thing to have the B Lab verify your claims in such a rigorous way. It takes the guess work out for the public, so they can be completely confident in our claims.”
The performance standards B Corps meet are comprehensive, transparent, and verified. B Lab reviews and verifies many indicators such as the sourcing of ingredients, energy efficiency practices, trash and waste, non-GMO claims, employee benefits, community donations, diversity hiring practices, carbon emissions mitigation and so much more. Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corporations measure a company’s impact on all its stakeholders from employees and suppliers to the community, its customers, and the environment.
The B Corp certification is like a Fair Trade certification, but for the whole business instead of a single product.
Montanya answered about 200 questions regarding its business and then B Lab verified those answers. The minimum standard needed for certification is 80 points. There are more than 2,500 companies from more than 130 industries and 50+ countries that have earned B Corp status, all with a unifying goal to redefine success in business.
And in September 2019, B Lab recognized Montanya Distillers as a Best for the World Company, meaning that it operates within the to 10% of all B Corps. That puts us in the company of business we admire, like Patagonia and TOMS—and inspires us to keep improving!
